Our History

Swordale House and its surrounding estate have a long and colourful history. Originally owned by John Dearg Munro, Swordale House was sold to Major Randle Jackson in 1885, a would-be politician and local benefactor. Vocal in local matters, the wealthy Jackson was met with mixed reviews by crofters and workers in the area. He opened a School Soup Kitchen for the people of Kiltearn that ran until the 1940s.
Following his death, Jackson’s wife Emily and subsequently their daughter, Annie, took over the running of the estate. Annie died in a mysterious shooting accident in 1928, witnessed solely by her husband, Richard Meinertzhagen, subject of the book ‘Solider, Scientist and Spy’ by Mark Cocker. Swordale House is now cared for by the Browne family, who welcome you to explore its history for yourself.

There are plenty of impressive walks nearby, including a short uphill stroll from which you’ll encounter spectacular views of the Cromarty Firth.

While we’re surrounded by Scottish countryside, we’re just a short drive from the villages of Evanton, with the idyllic Black Isle villages of Cromarty, Fortrose and Rosemarkie within easy reach.
